The development of breasts in a male is a condition known as gynecomastia. This can occur for unknown reasons, or be a result of obesity or weight loss, steroids, hormonal disorders, or even marijuana use. The patient should be assessed for causes that should be addressed that may stop, or improve the amount of breast tissue.

Gynecomastia can lead to feelings of embarrassment and awkwardness, affecting self esteem, clothing selection, and social interactions.

There are different approaches to male breast reduction surgery based on the extent of gynecomastia, amount of excess skin, and age of the patient. Different procedures include liposuction, excision of breast tissue, and excision of excess skin.

DAY OF SURGERY

Operations are performed at our private surgery site in Sarnia or at Stratford General Hospital. Surgery is performed either under local anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic administered by our team of board-certified anaesthesiologists, and is completed as an outpatient procedure (go home the same day).

POSTOPERATIVE RECOVERY

Patients are seen one week after surgery, where the initial dressing is removed. Follow up procedure and the amount of activity postoperatively allowable vary greatly, based on the type of male breast reduction performed.
